In his explanation of the verse:

 وَاعْفُ عَنَّا وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَآ

"... _And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us_ ..."

(Al-Baqara 2: Verse 286),

Imaam Ibn Katheer (d. 774AH) said:

' "And pardon us" ;

that is, regarding what is between us and You of our mistakes and laxities. 

"and forgive us" ;

That is, regarding what is between us and Your slaves; do not allow them see our faults and sins, 

" and have mercy upon us" :

That is, regarding the future; with Your grace, do not make us fall into other sins... '
