In a time when many Muslim men and women find themselves glued to their phones and distracted by endless digital engagements, personal and environmental hygiene is unfortunately being neglected. The Prophet ﷺ taught us to seek refuge in Allaah from laziness, and for good reason.

In Ḥadīth 656 of al-Adab al-Mufrad, the Prophet ﷺ said:

 اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْكَسَلِ وَالْمَغْرَمِ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَسِيحِ الدَّجَّالِ، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ النَّارِ

“O Allaah, I seek refuge in You from laziness and heavy debt, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Dajjāl and from the punishment of the Fire.”

This duʿāʾ reveals how dangerous laziness can be, not just spiritually, but socially and hygienically.

Today, Ash-Shaykh Aboo Naasir Ibraahim bn Abdurrauf (ḥafiẓahullāh), in his weekly reading and explanation of al-Adab al-Mufrad here in Nigeria, gave a powerful insight into this hadeeth. He explained how many of the hygiene problems we see in homes, masājid, and neighborhoods stem from laziness, especially among people constantly distracted by their devices.

The Shaykh emphasized that Muslims — men and women alike — should be examples of cleanliness and discipline in society, in line with Prophetic teachings.
